Tianlingkou Formation

Tianlingkou Fm

Period:
Ordovician

Age Interval:
Middle-Later Ordovician, (52)

Province:
Guangxi

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is at area 0.5 km north of Village Tianlingkou in Xing'an County, Guangxi. The Tianlingkou Fm is derived from the Tianlingkou Bed proposed by Chao Kingkoo and Zhang Wenyou in 1952. In 1959 when Chao Kingkoo and Zhang Wenyou published the Tianlingkou Bed, they included it in Rongjiang Series overlying conformably on the Huang'ai Fm. Guangxi Party of Regional Geological Survey (1964) renamed the Tianlingkou Bed the Tianlingkou Fm, and considered it to be Early Silurian in age.

Synonym: (田岭口组)

Lithology and Thickness

The formation is composed of grayish green shale and sandstone. The Tianlingkou Fm recorded a thickness from incomplete 123 m to 698 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the Huang'ai Fm

Upper contact

It is unconformably overlain by the Devonian Lianhuashan Fm or is covered at the top.

Regional extent

This stratigraphic unit is exposed in Tianping Hill in Lingui to northern part of Quanzhou.

GeoJSON

null

Fossils

In the type area, the Tianlingkou Fm yields graptolites of lower D. complanatus assemblage and upper D. complexus assemblage, and on Tianping Hill, Lingui, the lower part yields graptolites H. teretiusculus, Dicranograptus nicholsoni dipason. Recently, Guangxi Party of Regional Geological Survey found the Caradoc graptolites from the lower part on Tianping Hill in Lingui.

Age

Middle-Later Ordovician. The Tianlingkou Bed had previously been thought to be “Middle Ordovician” in age. Chen Xu et al. (1981) restudied the type section, and suggested an Early-Middle Ashgill age for it.
